Research Design, Methods and Findings

The methodology that we developed to include nutritional goals into agricultural research combined farming systems research (see Shaner et al. 1982; B. DeWalt 1985) with a study of and understanding of the nutritional system (K. DeWalt 1981, 1983a, 1983b, 1984; DeWalt and DeWalt n.d.; Frankenberger 1985). By nutritional system, we mean those aspects of social, economic, cultural and ritual life impinging on the process of food getting, preparation, and consumption (see Richards 1932; K. DeWalt 1983:11). As we have outlined it (K. DeWalt and B. DeWalt n.d.), this approach requires that four areas be addressed in agricultural research programs that have improvement of nutritional problems as a goal. These include:

targeting agricultural programs to those at greatest nutritional risk;

understanding the relationships between crop production, crop utilization, and food consumption in order to predict the impact of new agricultural technology on food consumption and nutrition;

recommending ways in which agricultural research and development programs may be used to improve the nutritional situation of those most at risk; and

monitoring and evaluating programs on the basis of their impact on food consumption and nutritional status.
